Description
In 1741, Canaletto began a panoramic painting of Padua’s vast square, the Prato della Valle. To include a related print in his album of etchings, Views of Venice (1741-44), he split the composition to conform to the format of the other prints. Side by side, this print and its pendant, Pra' della Valle (G.1933.HO.1.8) reconstitute the original view, with a single figure bridging the gap: visible standing at the right edge of the left plate, a section of his cloak overlaps the right.
