Description
In 1741, Canaletto began a panoramic painting of Padua’s vast square, the Prato della Valle. To include a related print in his album of etchings, Views of Venice (1741-44), he split the composition to conform to the format of the other prints. Side by side, this print and its pendant, Santa Giustina in Pra' della Valle (G.1933.HO.1.7) reconstitute the original view, with a single figure bridging the gap: visible standing at the right edge of the left plate, a section of his cloak overlaps the right.
