Portrait of Jan de Mol
4 0 c m
actual image size: 22cm x 32cm

The orientation of the sitter’s body, towards the right, and his hands clasped in prayer indicate that this portrait was originally part of a larger, multi-part work, which may have included an image of Christ, or the Virgin and Child. It was made in commemoration of Jan de Mol, whom it represents. The inscription in Dutch on the frame reads: ‘In the year 1498, on the last day of May, our father Jan de Mol died, a loyal friend.’
