Description
A painter and conspicuous Bohemian, Nina Hamnett was an important link between the artistic communities of London and Paris. She knew avant-garde artists such as Modigliani and the sculptor Brancusi. She was also closely associated with the Bloomsbury Group, working for a period at Roger Fry's Omega workshops. This portrait was painted during or shortly after her brief love affair with Fry. In this austere portrait, Fry has managed to convey the sitter's intelligence and independent spirit. Hamnett’s bohemian lifestyle is suggested by her unconventional clothes and modern bobbed haircut
