Description

This is a rare double portrait by Dobson, one of the earliest and finest native English portrait painters. The poses and composition betray the influence of Van Dyck, whom Dobson succeeded as painter to the King in 1641. Long thought to represent a father and his son, the sitters have recently been identified as two court poets, John Taylor (on the left) and John Denham. The stone mask on which the latter rests his hand alludes to their association with the Arts
